Why Does My Carpet Smell Musty?
Carpet Cleaning Apex • September 26, 2026 • 8 min read
You walk into the bonus room after a week away and it smells like a basement, even though Apex houses rarely have one. Nothing was spilled, nobody cleaned the carpet recently, and yet the room has that damp, earthy, closed-up smell. Why does my carpet smell musty? Almost always because something in or under it is staying wet: humid air, a slow leak, moisture rising from below, or an old spill that never fully dried. A musty smell is the smell of microbes growing on damp material, so it is a moisture problem first and a cleaning problem second.
This guide is for musty smell with no recent carpet cleaning. (If the smell showed up right after a cleaning, the carpet drying time guide covers that case.) Below: the five usual causes in southwest Wake County homes, how to tell which one you have, the signs that it has become mold under the carpet, and who to call for each.
The Five Usual Causes of a Musty Carpet Smell
A musty carpet smell comes from one of five sources, and each leaves a different pattern. Match the pattern before you buy anything that promises to fix odors.
| Cause | Where the smell is | What else you notice |
|---|---|---|
| High indoor humidity | Whole room or whole floor, worst in closed rooms | Clammy air, condensation on windows or AC vents, smell stronger in summer |
| Slow hidden leak | One area, often along a wall, near a bathroom, laundry or water heater | Carpet cool or damp in one spot, baseboard swelling, water bill creeping up |
| Moisture from below (slab or crawlspace) | Ground-floor rooms, often the lowest or north-facing ones | Worse after heavy rain, carpet backing damp at the edges |
| Old pet accidents | Specific spots, often corners and doorways | Smell sharpens on humid days; spots glow under a UV light |
| Earlier water event that never fully dried | The room where a leak or overflow happened | Smell started weeks after “everything dried” |
The humidity row matters more here than in most places. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity “below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity” (EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). Triangle summers make that hard: the State Climate Office reported that Raleigh’s average dew point in July 2025 was 69.8°F, the highest for any July since 1946 (State Climate Office of North Carolina, 5 August 2025). A guest room with the vent closed, or a finished room over the garage that the AC barely reaches, can sit above 60 percent for weeks.
Pro tip: Put an inexpensive digital hygrometer in the room for three days before you do anything else. If it reads above 60 percent most of the time, humidity is at least part of your answer, and no carpet treatment will hold until the air is drier.
Why Does My Carpet Smell Musty? How to Find the Cause
Work from the room outward. Most people can narrow it down in an afternoon without lifting anything.
- Smell low and map it. Get down on your hands and knees and move around the room. A smell that is even everywhere points to humidity. A smell that gets stronger toward one wall or corner points to a leak, a pet spot or moisture from below.
- Feel for cool, damp spots. Press your palm flat into the carpet near walls, doorways and anything plumbed. Damp pad feels cold before it feels wet.
- Check what shares the wall. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, water heaters, refrigerator ice lines and AC air handlers in closets are the usual slow-leak sources. Look at the base of each for staining or swollen trim.
- Watch the weather. If the smell is worst for a day or two after heavy rain, suspect moisture coming up through a slab or from a crawlspace, or water getting in at a door threshold.
- Use a UV flashlight after dark. Old pet urine glows under blacklight. If the glowing spots line up with the smell, it is a pet problem, not a humidity one.
- Lift a corner if you can. Pull the carpet back gently at a closet corner using pliers on the tack strip edge. Look at the pad and the tack strip for dark staining, spotty growth or damp wood.
Many Triangle homes sit over a crawlspace, and a wet or poorly vented crawlspace can push damp air up through the subfloor into ground-floor rooms. That is not a carpet problem, and it will keep coming back until the crawlspace is dealt with by a crawlspace or moisture contractor.
What Are the Signs of Mold Under Carpet?
The signs of mold under carpet are a musty smell that gets stronger when you lift the carpet, visible dark or fuzzy growth on the pad, backing or tack strip, and a damp or stained subfloor. A smell alone is enough to take seriously: the EPA says “you may suspect hidden mold if a building smells moldy, but you cannot see the source,” and lists “the underside of carpets and pads” among the places it hides.
Look for these when you lift a corner:
- Dark spotting or a fuzzy film on the underside of the carpet or the top of the pad
- Black or green staining on the wooden tack strip
- Pad that crumbles or feels slimy instead of springy
- Water stains or darkened wood on the subfloor
- Allergy-type symptoms that ease when you leave the room
If you find growth, size matters. The EPA says: “If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself.” For carpet, handling it yourself usually means cutting out and bagging the affected pad and carpet, drying the area, and fixing the moisture source. The EPA also notes that carpet “may have to be thrown away if they become moldy,” because mold grows into the fibers and backing where cleaning cannot fully remove it.
Anything larger than about 10 square feet, anything that followed sewage or floodwater, or any growth on drywall or framing is a job for a mold remediation contractor. Mold remediation is specialist work, and it is not something a carpet cleaning service should sell you.
What Fixes Each Cause
Fix the moisture first, then the carpet. Treating the smell without the source only buys a few weeks.
| Cause | Fix the source | Then the carpet |
|---|---|---|
| High humidity | Run the AC, open closed vents, add a dehumidifier; aim for the EPA’s 30 to 50 percent | A deep carpet cleaning once the room holds below 60 percent |
| Slow leak | A plumber or appliance repair for the line or fixture | Carpet water extraction and drying if the pad is still wet |
| Moisture from below | A crawlspace or waterproofing contractor | Replace any pad that stayed wet; clean the carpet |
| Old pet accidents | Nothing structural | Pet stain and odor removal that treats the pad, not just the pile |
| Old water event | Confirm the leak is fixed | Check the pad decision in can wet carpet padding be saved |
A note on sprays and powders: fragrance products cover the smell for a day or two and add residue that attracts soil. Baking soda absorbs a little odor from the surface but does nothing for a damp pad. If a musty smell survives a dry, low-humidity week, the source is below the pile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my carpet smell musty only in summer?
Because indoor humidity climbs with the dew point. Apex summers are humid, and a room that sits above 60 percent relative humidity lets carpet and pad hold enough moisture for microbes to grow. Running the AC and a dehumidifier to bring the room toward 30 to 50 percent usually fades a humidity-only smell within a couple of weeks.
Can a musty carpet smell make you sick?
It can, for some people. The EPA says “allergic reactions to mold are common,” that mold can trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to it, and that exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. If symptoms ease when you leave the room, find the moisture source and talk to your doctor.
Will carpet cleaning get rid of a musty smell?
Only if the carpet itself is the source and the room is dry. Cleaning a carpet over a wet pad or a leaking wall adds moisture and makes the smell return. Fix the source first, then book a cleaning.
My carpet got wet a month ago and dried. Why does it smell now?
The pad or subfloor probably never dried completely. Carpet feels dry on top long before the pad does, especially in humid weather. Read what to do when carpet gets wet for the drying window, and have the pad checked with a moisture meter.
Is a musty smell always mold?
No. It is always a sign of moisture, but it can be bacteria on damp fibers or old urine reactivating in humid air rather than visible mold. Lifting a corner, as described above, is how you find out.
Who do I call for mold under carpet in Apex?
For an area larger than about 10 square feet, call a mold remediation contractor. For a small damp area caught early, carpet water extraction can dry and clean what is saveable. You can also request a free quote and describe what you found when you lifted the corner.
Musty Carpet Smell in Apex, Cary or Fuquay-Varina?
The answer to why your carpet smells musty is nearly always moisture that is not leaving: humid air, a hidden leak, damp from below, or an old spill. Find the source with the checks above, bring indoor humidity under 60 percent, and only then clean or replace.
