A Railroad Crossroads on the National Register
The New Hill Historic District was nominated to the National Register as a commercial crossroads with the houses, farmsteads and community buildings around it, about 282 acres of gently rolling farmland and woods. Its period of significance runs from 1860 to 1950, and its buildings are Late Victorian, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival. The crossroads is formed by New Hill-Holleman Road (SR 1127) running north and south and Old US 1 running east and west, and the district reaches about half a mile south along New Hill-Holleman Road and about a mile west along Old US 1 to take in New Hill Baptist Church and its cemetery.
The railroad is the reason the crossroads is there. The nomination records that the line through New Hill was built after the Civil War along the route of the old Raleigh westward stage road, that a freight and passenger depot went up at New Hill shortly after the war, and that the tracks still run along the district's southern edge. The stores at the crossroads, including the late nineteenth century building known locally as the New Hill Emporium, and houses such as the c. 1904 house built for the railroad's station master, grew up around that depot.
Houses of that age raise their own cleaning questions. A crossroads house built before 1950 might hold a wool rug passed down with the house, a chair covered in a fabric that tolerates no water, or carpet tacked over an original wood floor. A service can test for dye stability on a hidden corner before anything wet touches the fiber and choose the method to suit it. Area rug cleaning and upholstery cleaning each start with that check, and every rug and chair gets its own line on the quote.
An Unincorporated Crossroads, Not a Downtown
New Hill has no mayor, no town council and no town limits. It is an unincorporated community in southwestern Wake County, so the county handles what a town hall would handle elsewhere. There is no downtown business district beyond the stores at the crossroads, and the ZIP code covers a wider area than the historic district itself.
The 2001 nomination already described agriculture as becoming a rare pursuit in developing Wake County, even as fields of tobacco, hay, soybeans and corn were still worked around New Hill. Since then, newer houses have gone up in the area around the old crossroads, which means a New Hill carpet can be decades old or only a year or two old.
New carpet has a problem of its own. A house finished while neighboring lots are still being graded and framed collects drywall dust and construction grit in its new carpet, and daily walking presses that grit down into the pile. Left in place, that grit cuts the fiber; pulled out in an early extraction, it goes into the recovery tank instead. The article on first cleanings for new homes goes into detail.
Harris Lake, the County Park and What Comes In the Back Door
Harris Lake County Park is a 680-acre Wake County park at 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill, on what the county calls the Shearon Harris Reservoir. A park and a lake nearby mean trail mud and wet gear can come in through the back door, and carpet near that door takes the soil first.
Trail mud, sand and wet gear act like heavy soil once they reach carpet, and the lane from the back door takes most of it. The cost page prices that lane under "Red clay / heavy traffic lanes", +$15 to $40, for the extra pre-treatment and dwell time. A dog that comes home from a trail brings in more of the same, and pet stain and odor removal is +$30 to $100 or more on the cost page, depending on the number and severity of the areas a UV inspection finds.
Soil lands on furniture as well as floors: a sofa by the back door picks up damp dog fur and whatever came in on a gear bag. A sofa or sectional is $90 to $220 on the cost page, depending on size and fabric. Damp air and wet gear can also slow drying after a cleaning, so a homeowner can ask for extra dry passes on named rooms and run the HVAC fan afterward; the guide to carpet drying time covers what speeds it up.
Pricing for a Crossroads Farmhouse or a New Build
The same bands apply to a farmhouse near the crossroads and to a new house off a newer street. On the carpet cleaning cost guide, a whole house (five or more areas) runs $200 to $350, three rooms with a hallway $120 to $180, and a single room up to about 200 square feet $40 to $75. Stairs are priced per flight at $2 to $4 a step, and tile and grout cleaning is $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot, with sealing quoted separately.
The cost page names what pushes a job up or down inside a band: soil, pet history, furniture and fiber. A larger house with more rooms and more stairs lands higher because there is more to clean, not because of where it is. Hot water extraction starts with pre-treatment and dwell time and ends with dry passes, and the written quote lists each area before any work starts.
In a historic-district house, the quote can separate the rooms with wool rugs or old upholstery from the rooms with ordinary carpet, so each is priced on its own line from its own band. That makes it easy to clean the carpeted rooms now and the delicate pieces later, or all of it at once, with the numbers known in advance.

New Hill Carpet Cleaning Questions, Answered
Does this site cover New Hill, or only Apex?
New Hill is in the area this site covers, from the historic crossroads to the houses around Harris Lake. A New Hill address is priced from the same table as an Apex one, after the same walk-through.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in New Hill, NC?
From the cost page: three rooms and a hallway, $120 to $180; a whole house of five or more areas, $200 to $350; a single room up to about 200 square feet, $40 to $75; stairs, $2 to $4 per step. Pet treatment and tile and grout are separate bands, and the final figure is written after a walk-through.
My home is brand new. Does the carpet already need cleaning?
It can. Grit from nearby building sites is fine enough to hide in new pile, and removing it early keeps it from grinding the fiber down.
We are near Harris Lake and track in mud from the trails. Does that need different treatment?
Trail mud and wet gear behave like heavy soil. Pre-treatment with proper dwell time loosens it from under the pile before extraction, and heavy traffic lanes have their own band on the cost page, +$15 to $40. Extra dry passes on named rooms can be listed on the quote.
My house is in the historic district. Can original wool rugs or carpet be cleaned safely?
Yes, with the right chemistry. Wool can shrink or bleed if it is cleaned hot and wet like synthetic carpet, so a dye-stability test on a hidden corner comes first and the method is chosen to suit the fiber. The written quote names the method for each rug and room.
