Carpet Stretching Cost in NC (2026): Ripples and Buckles
Carpet Cleaning Apex • September 10, 2026 • 7 min read
Ripples across a hallway, a wave in front of the sofa, a bubble that shifts when you walk on it. Buckled carpet is not just cosmetic: it is a trip hazard, and every time you walk across a ripple the backing flexes and wears out faster. Left long enough, a carpet that could have been restretched in an hour or two becomes a carpet that needs replacing.
This guide covers what carpet stretching actually costs in North Carolina in 2026, why carpet ripples in the first place, and when stretching is no longer the answer. Stretching is a separate job from carpet cleaning, usually done by a flooring installer, so this guide explains what drives the price rather than quoting one.
How Much Does Carpet Stretching Cost in NC?
Carpet stretching is priced by the job, and the cost comes down to room count, perimeter, and whether seams or tack strip also need work. Most companies also build a setup charge into small jobs, because the setup is the same whether the job is one room or four.
| Job size | What moves the price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single room (up to 250 sq ft) | Perimeter to detach and re-tack | The most common repair |
| Large room or open plan | More perimeter, more tension to pull | Costs more than a standard room |
| Hallway or stairs landing | Short runs, tight working space | Often added to a room job |
| Whole house | Number of rooms | Usually cheaper per room than one-offs |
| Stretch plus reseam | A failed seam as well as slack | Adds seam work to the stretch |
If you are also planning a cleaning, stretch first. The two are separate jobs, often done by different trades, and the order matters (see the FAQ below).
Why Does Carpet Ripple?
Understanding the cause matters, because in one case stretching fixes it permanently and in another it will come back.
Improper original installation
The most common cause by far. Carpet should be installed with a power stretcher, a tool that uses leverage against the opposite wall to pull the carpet genuinely tight before it is hooked onto the tack strip. Installing with only a knee kicker is faster and cheaper and leaves the carpet slightly slack from day one. That slack shows up as ripples within one to three years.
If your carpet rippled in a home where it was installed within the last few years, this is almost certainly why, and a proper power stretch will fix it for good.
Humidity, and this is an NC problem
Carpet fibers and backing absorb moisture and expand. In North Carolina’s humid summers, carpet in a house without consistent air conditioning will expand and then fail to fully contract, gradually loosening over seasons. Homes that sit empty and unconditioned, rentals between tenants, and rooms with poor airflow ripple noticeably faster here than in drier climates.
Dragging heavy furniture
Sliding a loaded bookcase or sectional across the room shifts the carpet off the tack strip. The ripple usually appears as a distinct wave in the direction of the drag. Lift furniture rather than sliding it, or use proper glides.
Delamination or a failing pad
If the secondary backing is separating from the primary, or the pad underneath has broken down, the surface will buckle no matter how tight you stretch it. This is the case where stretching does not hold, and a good technician will tell you before taking your money.
Wrong pad specification
A pad that is too thick or too soft for the carpet allows excessive movement underfoot, which works the carpet loose over time. Common in homes where a plush pad was upgraded without changing the carpet.
When Stretching Is Not the Answer
Be wary of anyone who will stretch anything. These are the situations where the honest answer is no:
- Visible delamination. If the backing layers have separated, stretching pulls the top layer and the ripple returns quickly.
- Badly worn traffic lanes. Stretching does not restore matted or worn pile, and tightening can make wear patterns more obvious.
- Extensive pet damage to the pad. If the pad is contaminated, it needs replacing, and that means pulling the carpet regardless.
- Carpet near the end of its life. Residential carpet typically lasts 8 to 15 years. Stretching a 14-year-old carpet often buys a year.
A reputable company will pull up a corner and look at the backing and pad before quoting. If nobody looks underneath, get a second opinion.
What Is Involved in a Proper Restretch
This is worth knowing so you can tell whether you got what you paid for:
- Furniture is moved out of the room
- Carpet is detached from the tack strip along the walls being stretched
- Tack strip is inspected and replaced where it has failed, particularly common in older homes and near doorways
- A power stretcher is used to pull the carpet tight, bracing against the opposite wall
- Carpet is re-hooked onto the tack strip
- Excess is trimmed and edges tucked
- Furniture is replaced
Step four is the one that matters. A knee kicker alone cannot generate the tension a power stretcher does. If a quote seems unusually cheap and the technician arrives without a power stretcher, the ripples will be back within a year or two. It is entirely reasonable to ask what tool will be used.
How Can You Save Money on Carpet Stretching?
- Bundle it with other flooring work. If an installer is already coming for a repair, adding the stretch shares the trip charge.
- Do all the affected rooms at once. The setup cost dominates a single small job.
- Move your own furniture. Same saving as with cleaning.
- Act early. A mild ripple is a straightforward stretch. A severe buckle that has been walked on for two years has often damaged the backing, which can turn a repair into a replacement.
- Ask about tack strip condition upfront. Replacement is inexpensive when included in the original scope and annoying as a surprise mid-job.
- Do not stretch carpet you are replacing within a year. Put the money toward the new installation and insist on a power stretch that time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to stretch carpet in one room?
It depends mainly on room size and perimeter. A standard bedroom is the simplest job, large open-plan rooms with more perimeter to detach cost more, and most companies add a setup charge to a single-room job. Get a written quote from someone who has looked at the backing and pad.
Can rippled carpet be fixed permanently?
Yes, when the cause is a poor original installation and the carpet and pad are otherwise sound. A proper power stretch against solid tack strip should hold for the remaining life of the carpet. If the cause is delamination or a failed pad, the ripple will return.
Can I stretch carpet myself?
You can rent a knee kicker and a power stretcher from most tool rental shops. The work is physically demanding, requires detaching and re-hooking the carpet without damaging the edge, and getting the tension wrong either leaves the ripple or creates a new one. For a single small ripple it is feasible. For a whole room it usually is not worth the risk of damaging carpet you are trying to save.
Does carpet stretching damage the carpet?
Not when done correctly. The carpet is detached at the edges and re-secured; the field of the carpet is not cut. Risk comes from overstretching, worn backing that tears at the edge, or a technician forcing tension onto failing tack strip.
How long does carpet stretching take?
Most single rooms take one to two hours including furniture. A whole house is typically a half to full day. Carpet is walkable immediately afterward, with no drying time.
Should I clean or stretch first?
Stretch first, then clean. Stretching moves the carpet and can bring soil to the surface at the edges, and the cleaning afterward removes it. If you are booking both together, a good company will sequence it that way automatically.
Why does my carpet ripple in summer but not winter?
Humidity. Carpet backing absorbs moisture and expands in NC’s humid months, and slack that was marginal in winter becomes a visible ripple in July. Consistent air conditioning reduces the swing considerably. Seasonal rippling in a carpet that is otherwise fine is a strong sign the original installation was under-stretched.
Before You Book a Carpet Stretch
Stretching is priced by how many rooms and how much perimeter has to be detached, so it quotes quickly. Send an installer a photo of the ripple and the room dimensions and most jobs can be estimated over the phone.
